Researches point out that we struggle to self-assess which learning method is effective. 1 As an 2019 study has shown, when left to their own devices, student frequently demonstrate poor judgment regarding their own learning. They tend to gravitate towards strategies demanding low cognitive effort, such as text highlighting, passive listening to lectures, or repeatedly reread sources. Many of those methods create an illusion of learning.
