The obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep related breath issue. Two of its main symptoms including

  • Apnea: Complete cessation of airflow for at least 10 seconds
  • Hypopnea: Partial reduction in airflow (>30% decrease) for at least 10 seconds

The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is a diagnostic tool for determining the presence and severity of OSA. A person has OSA if they have AHI of at least 5.

Signs and symptoms including snoring, obesity, observed breathing pauses during sleep, and daytime sleepiness.

Treatments

For those who with moderate or severe OSA, the two most commonly used treatment are nasal continuous positive airway pression (CPAP) and oral appliance.

CPAP let patients to wear a mask which delivers air to keep the airway open at night.
